Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
