A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using these medications need to be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a switch activating and you become ravenous," said one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Use is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
