In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the New Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Discussions Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
