Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Players will gain the ability to contest particular calls from the official, following the system currently in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development comes just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
